As an independent businesswoman, I understand the importance of lowering taxes, balancing budgets and watching the bottom line. As your legislator I will use this businesslike approach to oppose all “temporary taxes” and their endless extensions – because I know that in Sacramento no tax is ever truly temporary.
As someone working the private sector, I know we also need real pension reform that brings public pensions in line. This is a question of fairness for taxpayers who are constantly asked to underwrite gold-plated public pensions while they struggle to fund and grow their own retirement in the private sector. The private sector is asking employees to pay more; public sector employees will have to pay more as well.
One great example of where business approach is lacking is with the high speed rail boondoggle. I oppose the bullet train and believe we should be investing our water infrastructure instead.
As an independent businesswoman, I understand that a positive business climate creates jobs – not government. Government taxation and regulation just needs to get out of the way. As your Assemblywoman, I will be a consistent vote – and a strong voice – in opposition to the all-out effort underway in Sacramento to undermine Proposition 13 with $6 to $10 billion in job-killing property tax increases on California businesses. This pro-tax agenda will just push businesses and jobs out of California.
California’s unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy has become so big and powerful that we now have a “crony capitalist” environment where only those who can afford lobbyists can compete. In order to restore a fair, free market-based economy, I will introduce legislation that all significant bureaucratic regulations get an up or down vote by the people’s representatives. As an independent businesswoman I will also be an advocate for streamlining regulations for small businesses that are currently buried under endless paperwork.
We need accountability in education. In business, we are accountable for our decisions. As a Trustee of the Orange Unified School District, we have balanced our budget while raising test scores. I also have seen firsthand how we need accountability reforms, such as teacher tenure reform, so we can hire good teachers and fire the bad ones.
High standards. Local control. Top-down Common Core standards are confusing to students - and even parents. As your legislator I will push for more local control so that our communities – not faraway bureaucrats - can set high educational standards that prepare students for universities and successful careers.
I will also introduce legislation to make building and remodeling schools in California more affordable. In the private sector we are able to keep costs low, but Sacramento’s prevailing wage requirements hurt school construction because they force school districts to pay as much as twice the rate - and it’s the students who pay the price.
On the topic of immigration, I support legal immigration, but I strongly oppose illegal immigration and reckless Sanctuary City policies. I believe that any city that intentionally ignores federal law is putting all of us at risk and should face fiscal consequences.
Likewise, in light of recent terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California should demand that adequate vetting procedures are in place prior to admitting refugees from ISIS-infiltrated territories, such as Syria.
